The Sustainable Development Goals are the plans to get a better future for all. The SDG helps to address the challenges we face in the world. These challenges include poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. Therefore, the need for the United Nations SDG program for young leaders initiative in 2020 arises to this effect. The idea of SDGs came at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), also known as Rio+20. At that conference, Colombia proposed the idea of the SDGs at a preparation event for Rio+20.  So, this idea was chosen by the United Nations Department of Public Information 64th NGO Conference in Bonn, Germany. The suggestions of the outcome document are the 17 sustainable development goals. The sustainable development goals are a new, universal set of goals that UN member states should use to frame their agendas and political policies over the next 15 years.

About the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for the Young Leaders Initiative 2022

Every two years, 17 new Young Leaders emerge through an open call for applications and different assessment processes. These candidates get scores based on their ability to influence and motivate others, innovative nature, and storytelling skills. They examine their work based on adaptability, impact, achievement, influence, and integrity. Afterwards, a selection committee of leaders from the United Nations, governments, civil society, and the private sector conduct a final analysis of the best candidates. After the tenure of these leaders, they still remain in the program as alumni to work together with and teach the current class of Young Leaders. The sponsorship of the Young Leaders Initiative comes from the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth. This 2015 program is a  part of the Global Youth Partnership for Sustainable Development Goals and is housed in the Envoy’s Office.
